Last night, I attended the 2008 IP3 awards put on by Public Knowledge, a Washington DC based public interest group working to defend our rights in the emerging digital culture. I had a chance to meet two of the award recipients, Fred von Lohmann and Ben Scott.

Recently, I had let myself lose track of the movement for copyright balance and digital world legal movements in general. But it was great to find myself in a room full of the people that are acting on our behalf to protect our digital freedoms. I’d do a bad job at summing up the state of the digital rights movements – so, go check out Public Knowledge, Free Press and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. If you are at all a techie or supporter of technology, knowing what is happening on the legal front should be relatively important to you.

I am not the trendiest of people but I do enjoy discovering lesser known, newer music. I used to love to buy CDs, especially at live shows. I like possessing the freedom to listen to music on demand and giving to the artists in return.

When going digital became an option, I did it. But for a while I struggled with the purchasing and owning music in digital form because of DRM. Many of my 2006 posts talk about copyright issues and such.

The tides changed and now I shop regularly on Amazon and iTunes for DRM free music. I love the convenience. It makes me giddy.

However, now my music discovery skills are rusty and times have changed a bit. I am learning new ways. So far, I peruse my friends’ music lists on their profiles, sample online and glance at Amazon’s recommendations from my selections. I have found some but less success listening to Pandora. The trouble with Pandora is that my musical tastes seem to random for it and it requires some dedicated teaching. I wish there were better routes of discovery. I think there is definitely some room for shaking up the music industry here.

I am looking for new ways…

Last night’s CopyNight was back at RFD. Us regulars were all there, in addition to some new people, last month’s hosts from Public Knowledge and the guests of honor from The Future of Music Coalition. The conversation stayed well on point about the the future of the music business. Of course, we did go off on a few occasional, yet interesting, tangents.

It was a good experience. I am looking forward to CopyNight in May in hopes that the momentum continues building. I also hope that something comes from these gatherings of minds on a particular topic. I don’t dare to guess what that might be for us.

In Podcast 11, I joined Luke to interview Gregg of Girl Talk, a very interesting and dedicated musician. From the interview, you can tell that he is definitely on the edge of something. On the edge of what? Well, listen to the podcast. We talked about his music, how it works and why he does what he does. Art is never completely original if you think of it in the terms of inspiration, tools and elements. It is the completed work that is original. But getting away from theory and back to reality, Girl Talk is creating fun music.

Most importantly, we covered some of the issues that he may face in the future. There clearly could be some copyright issues here with the sampling. However, this grey area of incentive vs. ingredients has yet to be completely defined. It was a great subject to cover.

It seems that the Pirate Bay issue has gotten pretty big in Sweden. Some may notice that I posted earlier about this. I must admit it all seemed a bit unreal at first. I mean, seriously, they held a rally on a pirate ship. But the more I researched the more it seemed like an actual pressing issue for the Swedish public. I won’t detail the latest because it is much easier for me to direct you to this article from the BBC. I admire that they have brought the subject to the forefront for discussion. Regardless of my opinion about the tactics or justification of either side.
